There's no mistaking the style and design and even later the Toyota line of cars tried to capture the sleek aesthetics of this legendary classic muscle car!

1968 Mercury Cyclone GT For Sale

With it's 390 GT V-8 engine and 325 horse power and 3 speed manual transmission it sported lots of goodies. It also had a 3 speed select shirt Merc O Matic optional feature. The front end suspension had upper A arms, strut stabilized lower arms, coil springs and anti sway bar. The rear end suspension boasted live axle and leaf springs. Front end brakes matched the rear end brakes drums and front discs optional. Wheelbase was 116.0 and the top speed for the GT V-8-302 was 112 mph and in the CJ 428 was 116 mph. It reached 0-60 mph in about 5.5 to 6.1 seconds.

The design was enhanced with it's streamlined aesthetics that in those days was sporty and trendy as aficionados will point out the similarities with the Ford line of muscle cars.

The line lasted a couple of years and then faded out which makes it doubly rare and a sought after find.

Under the hood was the 302-cid V-8 with again, 3 speed tranny and 210 horsepower. As mentioned earlier the more powerful 390 was also packaged.

These cars were so well received by enthusiasts that the top racing tracks featured them as powerful additions to their line ups such as NASCAR.

The variations on the line offered changes in transmissions but not wheel base, a mistake some folks back then and today make.

What's of most importance to serious collectors and investors in such classic muscle cars is the fact these cars are not only rare and sought for high and low, but once found they may offer the platform for modification to even more powerful and customizable vehicles. Owners who had them as teenagers in the days of old reminisce in the nostalgia and fun they had then and will fork out that money to get these cars back. Too bad it was often overlooked back then because if folks in the good ol' days of muscle cars knew then what we know now, they would never have parted with these proven muscle machines.

Take a look around the next time you visit a classic car show and see if you can find one of these. If you do, just hang around a bit and listen to the stories of not only how cool people looked with these cars but listen to the performance stories and how the owners actually acquired them. Many a story exists of collectors traipsing through muddy swamps, snowy mountains, broiling deserts, and tough neighborhoods just to get the parts to these cars. You can imagine what happens when you tell them you actually own one!

Throughout these decades – going back to as early as fifties – car makers were on the prowl for smarter designs, better engines, and more solid construction models to make their vehicles better than the competition. This journey for more aerodynamic, more stylish ideas led to certain models of the Mercury Cougar. More particularly, one impressive vehicle model designed by Ford/Mercury was the 1967 Mercury Cougar.

1967 Mercury Cougar

Based on the second-gen Ford Mustang, the 1967 Mercury Cougar introduced their own version of a pony car. Naturally, there were some differences between the two. First, the 1967 Mercury Cougar featured a longer wheelbase that topped the Mustang by 3”. Second, it featured hidden headlights defined by the divided front grille that had vertical bars, known as the “shaver grille”. It was the same grille that came on the 1964 Dodge Charger.

But that wasn’t all. The 1967 Mercury Cougar was designed in a way as to make the back look similar to the front by placing vertical grille work around the license plate. This effect hid the taillights and the turn signals, similar to the way Thunderbird did it. With all of these things combined, this European-looking car made attracted United States buyers who are notorious consumers of “different.” Less American than the Mustang, the 1967 Mercury Cougar found its niche to be quite successful; the Cougar remained an active model for 7 more years. Additional options made it a truly classic American muscle car, and although it was only available as a two-door hard top, such features included:

  • Two styling options – base, and XR-7;
  • Engine varieties – 289 cid 200 horse power 2-bbl V8 as the base, and 390 cid 335 horse power 4-bbl V8;
  • GT performance options provided a 390 cid V8 engine with better handling

It’s a shame that both the base and the XR-7 only came with one trim. This certainly decreased the 1967 Mercury Cougar’s uniqueness, but what the car lacked in style it made up for in performance. Certainly, there was a shift from power to comfort as fuel prices hiked and emission laws were passed, and this happened in early 70s; the Cougar survived, making it only that much more of an American classic car. Besides the Cyclone, Cougar was Mercury’s other muscle car icon.

Granted, Mercury isn’t the most powerful vehicle brand out there; but what it lacks in performance, it makes up in style, handing, and a fancy interior design.

1970 Mercury Cyclone

The 1970 Mercury Cyclone rolled out in the same decade as other Mercury models like Comet. It competed with Ford Torino, setting itself apart with a unique design. The Spoiler model was a true upgrade to Mercury’s previous cars that had a reputation for being below the average standards in comparison to other makers’. The 1970 “coke bottle” design was a sporty look that matched the Cyclone Spoiler’s 370 horse power 429-cid V8 engine running at 5,400RPM. It was the same exact engine as the Thunderbird. Surprisingly enough, the Cyclone GT had a weaker engine: a 250 horse power 351 Cleveland V8 – a two-barrel engine. On the road, neither was a pony; it performed on par, if not better than, Mercury’s other line-ups like the Comet mentioned earlier. The Cyclone Spoiler is a rare species: it weighed 4,100 lbs and there were under 1,700 of them built in total.

The transmission is a 3-speed rear-wheel drive automatic. Current drivers say that the V8 engine doesn’t really hit you until you put your 1970 Mercury Cyclone in second gear, but when it kicks in, it really kicks in. With front and rear wheel breaks, the vehicle offered standard stopping capability as other cars – nothing truly special. Mercury put nothing but the best wood interior in their fancy lineup. The luxurious comfort of operating this car has frequently been compared to driving a Buick – now that’s not too shabby for a 40-year-old car. Quick steering makes the 1970 Mercury Cyclone perfect for curvy roads. It’s no surprise this car received the 1970 “Car Of The Year” award from Motor Trend.

Although the car was a bit overpriced if you compare its brand-new dollar value strictly to performance, its swag was top of the line: you could buy a factory-fresh 1970 Mercury Cyclone for under $4,500 with some accessories, but it could only do 0-60 mph test in 6.2 seconds. Other cars – even from mid sixties – did this benchmark better by over 10%. But Mercury just had to have a muscle car lineup, so that’s how the 1970 Mercury Cyclone came about.
