1966 Corvette 427

No other car can command the attention of the Corvette. Just say the name and people will bolt up and look around. They know a cool car when they see one and if you mention to them the 1966 Corvette 427 you might have people leaping over tables and chairs to spin their tales about these super cool classic muscle cars.

The popularity of the Corvette series made the season prime for the debut of the 1966 Corvette 427. It's secret agent type design made one almost forget about that big block V8 engine inside until you hit the gas. You never forgot about that V8 again!

It came in four engine formats, the 327 ci, 327 ci 350 L 79, 427 ci 390 hp L36, 427 ci 425 hp L72.

Wheelbase 98 inches, track front and rear 56.8 inches and 57.6 inches. Length at 175.1 inches, width 69.6 inches. Height for the coupe was 49.6 inches and for the convertible a 49.8 inches. Ground clearance came to 5.0 inches. Seat width at 2 x 20.5 inches. Headroom for the coupe was 37.0 inches and for the convertible it's 38.5 inches. Weight for the 1966 Corvette 427 came in at for the Coupe 3,140 lbs, for the convertible at 3,160 lbs. Compression ratio at 11.0:1, bore and stroke at 4.25 x 3.76, torque at 460 at 4,000 rpm.

Any fan of the 1966 Corvette 427 will know the speed specs down pat. It performed thus: 0-30 mph in 2.5 seconds, 0-40 mph in 3.3 seconds, 0-50 mph in 4.2 seconds, 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, 0-70 mph in 6.8 seconds, 0-80 mph in 8.8 seconds, 0-90 mph in 10.8 seconds, and 0-100 mph in 12.8 seconds.
It hit the standing quarter mile in 13.4 seconds at 105 mph and reached a top speed of 135 mph.

The L72 425 bhp 427ci V8 engine also had 427 cubic inches , watercooled four stroke preciprocating piston type 8 cylinders Vee configuration wit air injection emission control.

1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 SS

Fans of muscle cars will always remember the fourth generation version of the classic Chevrolet Z28 and the 1996 Chevrolet Z28 in particular! This car became a classic so fast that today finding one will bring about stories of legend.

This pony car/muscle car was a 2 door coupe that also came as a 2 door convertible. It had an F Body platform and FR layout. From 4 automatic to 5-6 speed manual. Wheelbase came in at 101.1 inches or 2,568 mm. 193 inches or 4,907 mm. 74.1 inches wide or 1,882 mm. It was 52 inches in height or 1,321 mm.

The Chevrolet Camaro Z28 featured the additions to the line of some minor revisions on the mechanical end. The car was pumped up with the 3800 series II that sure got the eye of Camaro enthusiasts. Dual catalytic converters needed by the OBDII brought about lower restriction but added that pump that was part of the mechanical upgrade. That sent the power up toe 285 hp and 325 lb per ft of torque.

It cleared the ground at 4.4 inches or 112 mm. Fuel capacity was 15.5 gallons or 58.7 litres. The engine also sported V8 in 90 degree vee, bore x stroke of 4 in x 2.48 in or 101.60 mm x 8840 mm, a displacement of 5.7 litre, 5733 cc, 349.849 cu in. Compression ratio of 10.40:1, EFi fuel system. Maximum power of 289 PS/285 bhp, 212.5 kW at 5200 rpm.

Let's not forget this car, yes, this car was the return of the SS! Now you know why this particular model, the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 from 1996 is so sought after. Had the company known back then what we know now they would have freaked. The car line was discontinued back then due to low sales etc. but that made this version of the Camaro the classic that it is today.

The tweaks that were performed on this line caused the hop up in power to the point it became a more powerful machine than cars that were manufactured almost ten years later. This is another reason that muscle car enthusiasts put this model on their must see and must have lists. If you go to many car shows that feature pony cars like this one you'll be able to get a look at not only how well they've held up but the various attributes that shows what people in the know appreciate.

If you grew up in the days when the 1996 Chevrolet Camaro was zooming round the country you will recall how people stood around in wonder at this machine. It has style and power and the name Camaro and with that Z28 attached meant if you were driving one of these people noticed you. You could see these vehicles today as collectors parade them now and then and some people even still have them for daily usage. If you do find one you'll need to first think about maintaining one for long term collectibility and you'll not only look good but have a piece of history.

1970 Chevelle SS 454

Prior to 1970, General Motors instituted a rule in their production and design facility which stated that no cars would be produced with an engine capacity of more than 6.6 litres. In 1970, GM discarded the displacement rule, and larger, faster engines became available as standard production options. The end result was that the addition of a glorious 1970 Chevelle SS 454 engine space option to the current SS 396.

The 1970 Chevelle SS 454 was rated at 270 kW(360 hp), or 290 kW(390 hp) for the more powerful Corvette version. The engine capacity was a staggering 454 cu, (7.4Litres) LS5 coming from a V8 big block engine. The LS6 variants of this enormously powerful engine, fed by a Holley 800 cfm four barrel carburetor, developed 340 kW (450 hp) and 680 Nm (500 ft lbf) of torque.

This powerful machine was able to complete a quarter-mile (400 metre) sprint in the low to mid-13 seconds. The top speed of the vehicle 105 to 108 mph (169 – 174 kph), in fact, the LS6 variants were considered along with the 1966 Corvette as the best performance by any engine offered to date, by a manufacturer in the muscle car era. General Motors did offer much more powerful versions, but they were underrated to keep the less savvy buyers from ordering them for illegal street use. Some of the other monster versions offered were the ZL1 and L88 427’s with rates of 320 kW (430 hp) but both of these engines produced well over 373 kW (500 hp) in stock configurations.

These were considered “race only” motors; very few were installed in production vehicles. The majority of orders placed for these engines came from racers that had connections in the production factory or sold over-the-counter spares To the general public. The '70 Chevelle's styling sported bulging fenders which alluded to the power lurking within, while bold, wide SS stripes accented the hood and rear deck. One of the most awesome cars ever to roam the streets, the 1970 Chevelle SS454 LS6 is truly a legendary American muscle car. This car marked the pinnacle of the muscle car era, when gas prices were of no concern to the owners of 7.4Litre engines.

The 1970 Chevelle 454SS was considered to be the end of the muscle car era due to the “insurance surcharge” nightmare that followed. Many people that bought the car, were not skilled enough to handle the enormous amounts of pure power generated by the 1970 Chevelle SS 454, thus a huge amount of the cars were involved in spectacular crashes. This led to insurance companies upping their premiums on all performance vehicles, The 454 SS was a big block engine and was referred to as the “Heavy Chevy” option.

1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396

The 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS model was introduced as a 396 cu muscle car monster and made many changes for the legendary 1967 year model. There were many advancements in this American muscle car and they came to form mainly in road manners and drive-ability. Low-profile tires were offered, replacing the standard two-ply 7.75x14inch rubber withF70x14 nylon belts. This greatly improved steering and maneuverability in the car, as well as improving grip to the tarmac. This improvement also helped achieve the maximum performance from the new disc brake system, available option that was well worth the extra money back then, when one considered the enhanced stopping power developed through easier pedal modulation.

The new tires were mounted to 14 inch slotted mag wheels. This gave the car a more aggressive stance and an eye catching appeal that swooned even the most hardcore of petrol heads.

The standard transmission used was a three speed manual with a more desirable four-speed available as an option. The two speed "power glide" automatic was, for the first time the three speed "Turbo hydra-matic", a gearbox long awaited by many Chevrolet fans, and was considered a quantum leap over the previous 'power glide' transmission, the new gearbox was noted for its ability to gear down promptly for better overtaking response.

A new energy absorbing steering column and padded instrument panel surface were introduced due to new federal safety regulations. However, the re-invented dashboard still appeared dull when compared to more exciting variations of muscle cars such as the GTO. On the exterior they were minor changes, a reworked bumper and grille and the blackout tail panel. The louvers the hood still remained non-functional. But all in all the car had a more sleeker, aggressive appeal that took the market by storm.

All in all Chevy had made vast improvements in the SS 396 model. When we look at the stats;
There were 63 000 built in total and it would was clocked the quarter mile in 15.3 seconds reaching a speed of 94 MPh. It would also do 0-60 Mph in a very respectable time of 6.5 seconds. All of this at an affordable starting price of $ 2825.00 made this cars popularity boom, with most Americans able to afford it.

The SS 396’s starting price was comparable to the popular Malibu models offered at the time, and it was affordable. Now anyone who wanted to be part of the muscle car era found that it didn’t hurt their back pocket as much. So began the legacy of the Chevrolet Chevelle 1967 model and it quickly developed a cult following as one of the most important cars in American muscle car history.

2010 Corvette Grand Sport

It finally came to replace the Z51 model: this car was truly inspired by Chrysler’s top-of-the-line model owners who wanted to ride in a steel, wider-stance convertible, but one that would also include special features unlike any before. 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS

As we mentioned in our previous article about the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, it was initially introduced in ’67; designed to compete with the Ford Mustang, this compact car rival was based off of the Pontiac Firebird frame. If you know a bit of French, you might recognize the name Camaro as the word for “buddy,” but hardcore American muscle cars fans will tell you that the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro is Mustang’s nightmare.

This model was built during four stages: the first generation (67-69), the second generation (72-81), the third generation (82-92), and the fourth generation (93-02). Likewise, the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro was made available in two versions. The RS (Rally Sport) was just an aesthetic upgrade from the regular Camaro. So was the SS (Super Sport), with the exception of extra performance upgrades.

There were 41,000 makes of the 1968 Chevy Camaro RS, and only 28,000 makes of the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS edition. A fresh air intake system, dubbed Astro Ventilation, was introduced this year. Divided tail lights in the back were all-new; other cosmetic modifications included a pointed front grill, side lights on the fender in the front, as well as a front spoiler. Chrome hood inserts were native to the SS version. Front headlights changed from oval to circle lights. The SS featured a 396 cu. in. 350 horsepower big-block engine. Staggered shocks also helped solve issues associated with wheel hops.

A Powerglide automatic gear, also called Torque Drive, was a manual transmission that wasn't introduced until year 1968. Also for an additional price, you could opt in for an AM/FM radio, air conditioning when available (impossible for big-block engines due to not having enough space), and other nice features, such as: folding rear seats, cruise control (available on V8 models only), bucket seats, dual exhaust system, and more.

The non-rally sport version of the car was rebuilt with a distinct center split, with backup lights installed within the standard taillight bezels. If you wanted four-wheel disc brakes, the dealership could install them for you; they were not a Chevy upgrade option. The 1968 Chevrolet Camaro pioneered the term “tick-tock-tach,” when an optional upgrade for the car included a clock (not available on standard models) built into the tachometer.

An even higher-class version, called the Z28, came out with bigger engines than the RS or SS, but there were less Z28s made than RSs or SSs. The 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 had an optional fiberglass spoiler, and a lot of models that are still in good shape have it.

1973 Chevrolet El Camino

Chevrolet dominated the muscle car market in the sixties and the seventies, because they stuck to a magic formula of success: most performance for least amount of money. The 1973 Chevy El Camino was one of their muscle cars that was oblivious to Ford’s success with their lineup of high power vehicles. It was a competitive brand name that was appealing to car-buyers because of its performance/price ratio; the Chevy El Camino certainly made history.

The 1973 Chevrolet El Camino was equipped with a V8, 245 horse power engine (at 4000RPM). They made under 65,000 of them, making this model way rarer than their predecessors. The Chevy El Camino lineup actually started in 1959, with the first edition featuring an Impala-like design. It was the old-school pickup truck: half-car, half-flatbed; although it didn’t survive past 1960, it re-emerged four years later as the Chevy Chevelle. The 1960 Chevrolet El Camino had a makeover, but it still resembled the Impala a lot. In 1965, when the brand re-emerged, the car came standard with a 250 horse power engine, which could be upgraded to 350 horse powers for just another $200. The 1966 version saw two additional 327 power options; although Chevy Chevelle came with a 375hp option, this was not the case for the El Camino. Special consoles could be ordered upon request.

This American muscle car boasted two calibrated springs designed to support two shock springs at each wheel. In 1967, besides the air-adjustable shock absorbers, not much changed about the Chevrolet El Camino besides the exterior design. Skipping a few years ahead, the 1970 Chevy El Camino came with support for 454 engines, capable of cranking out up to 450 horse powers with optional upgrades.

So, as you can see, the 1973 Chevrolet El Camino underwent major changes, as well as many power performance upgrades and optional functionality for those who wanted to spend a little extra to get the best of the best. The 1970 model could zoom through a quarter mile in 13.44 seconds at 108.17 mph. The 1973 model improved upon that even more. Also, the 1973 Chevy El Camino sported single headlights rather than double headlights like its predecessors. This American muscle car also came with a new grille, an increased length, and bumper-positioned turning lights. Although it could no longer fit as much stuff inside, the newer curved design was a hit upon its introduction on the market in 1973.

1962 Chevy Bel-Air

Throughout the sixties, much like Ford, the Chevrolet company has also worked on a select number of muscle cars. The Chevy Bel-Air, of course, has a lot of history about it that spans 3 decades. Throughout the fifties, the sixties and the seventies, The 1962 Chevrolet Bel-Air was the last year that Chevy produced this hard-top model.

This 4-speed manual transmission racing car delivers a beastly 409 horse powers; a true monster on the drag race course. Either a two- or a four-door sedan, the 1962 Chevy Bel-Air was available as a sports coupe, a convertible coupe, or sedan. It’s a comfortable ride with a number of additional perks that competing vehicles of the early 60s did not offer. These features included:

The earlier 1956 Chevy Bel-Air model came in V8, and was affordable with all the features you wanted, for under $3,000. Extra options for the 1957 Chevy Bel-Air included:

Only 365,000 of them were made, which makes today’s survivors a pricey antique.
